John Mitchell

John Mitchell, LLB, MST, EA,is an Enrolled Agent, former IRS Appeals Officer, and tax attorney at the J Mitchell Law Firm, PC in Houston, Texas. His insider experience with the IRS allows him to navigate tax procedures with uncommon precision.John’s practice focuses on IRS controversy, complex tax planning, high-stakes tax litigation, tax consulting, and compliance. Over the course of 30+ years, he has prepared more than 10,000 tax returns and handled over $100 million in tax controversy cases. John began his tax career in 1990 as an unenrolled preparer doing 1989 returns “by hand.” After graduating number one in his law school class in Guadalajara, he returned to Houston and sat for the Enrolled Agent exam, passing on his first attempt in 2015. Most recently, John passed the California Bar Exam. In 2023, he was one of only ten individuals in the United States to pass the United States Tax Court admission exam (out of 163 test takers), earning the prestigious designation United States Tax Court Practitioner (USTCP), admitted to practice in 2024. John is a nationally known public speaker and best-selling author. He has written for national tax journals and has been a radio and television talk show host and on-air contributor discussing both legal and tax matters. He has spoken for the Tax Alliance Conference (TAC), National Association of Enrolled Agents (NAEA), National Association of Tax Professionals (NATP), Texas Society of Enrolled Agents (TXSEA), Michigan Society of Enrolled Agents (MISEA), and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). John is a Fellow of the National Tax Practice Institute (NTPI), and in 2024 he was selected to write NTPI’s “spousal relief” curriculum. He has appeared on the Tax Talk Today Podcast and the EA Advocate Podcast, and he is the host of the Tax Pro Podcast. He is widely recognized for distilling complex tax law into clear, practical strategies for taxpayers and professionals alike. John speaks Spanish at a native-speaker level and enjoys books, movies, music, and spending time with family. He is a husband, father of two, stepfather of two, and grandfather of three.

Prior to joining J Mitchell Law Firm, Cay worked as a Retirement Plan Specialist with Retirement Education Partners, Inc., where she specialized in helping educators and non-profit organizations design and optimize their retirement programs. Her career also includes leadership roles with Equis Financial, Family First Life, and Symmetry Financial Group, where she focused on life insurance, mortgage protection, final expense coverage, and retirement planning. Throughout her career, Cay has demonstrated a commitment to protecting families’ financial futures while mentoring agents to achieve financial independence. Cay holds a Juris Doctorate from Thurgood Marshall School of Law at Texas Southern University and a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from the University of Houston-Clear Lake.
